The Power Systems Modelling (PSM) Lab of the University of Cyprus performed electrical tests at ‘Phaethon’ PV park (UCY). Among the tests, the team performed soil resistivity measurements using the Wenner method to construct a soil resistivity model. Soil resistivity is an electrical characteristic of the soil which affects the ability of corrosion currents to flow through the electrolyte (i.e. soil). To this extent, the value of soil resistivity depends on soil moisture and the concentrations of ionic soluble salts. Moreover, the value of soil resistivity is used as a comprehensive indicator of a soil’s corrosivity. Typically, the lower the resistivity, the higher will be the corrosivity. In addition, the team measured DC leakage currents due to the PV system, using high sensitivity current probes installed at the grounding system. The leakage current measured shows excellent correlation with the produced power of the PV system.
